Linate Airport
Viale Enrico Forlanini, 20090 Segrate MI, ItalyFacts and History about Linate Airport
In 2018, Milan Linate Airport handled 9.233,475 passengers, making it the 5th busiest airport in Italy. Used as a base by Alitalia and serving several international carriers, Linate Airport is located only 4 miles / 7 km east of Milan city center, giving it an advantage of Malpensa Airport, which is located 25 miles / 41 km distance from the city. Linate Airport is located in Segrate, which is linked via bus and train to the city of Milan and other parts of Northern Italy.
Linate Airport is connected to other parts of Italy via the A1, A4 and A7 motorways. This makes it easy to get to Bologna, Genoa, Parma and Venice, as well as to the Rho Fiera zone, where the international Milan Trade Fair is held every year.
Milan Linate Airport History
The airport dates back to the 1930's, when it was built adjacent to Idroscalo of Milan. Back then, Taliedo Airport, situated only 0.62 miles or 1 km from Milan's southern limits, had become far too small to accommodate commercial traffic. It was designed as one of the world's first aerodromes, and became hopelessly outdated, when commercial air travel became more affordable and passenger numbers rose dramatically. The first Milan Linate Airport soon became too small itself and was rebuilt in the 1950's, and again in the 1980's. By then Italy had risen to one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and Milan had become one of Europe's most influential centers for design, especially in fashion.
